Spring Skincare Tips from Cooper Spa Dallas

March 21, 2016 1 comment

Spring is here! As the seasons change, so should your skincare routine. Cooper Spa Dallas Manager Lisa Boyle shares skincare recommendations to implement for healthy, radiant skin this spring.Facial_CooperSpa_SDIL8670-Edit

Year-round exfoliation is ideal, but spring is a great time for a chemical facial peel. Spring peels can help shed dry winter skin caused by cold temperatures and brighten complexions for spring.

What is a chemical facial peel? A chemical facial peel is an exfoliating agent that typically contains alpha hydroxy acids and/or beta hydroxy acids. Acids break down the bond between healthy and dead skin cells, allowing the dead cells to shed.

Today’s chemical exfoliators are used in a controlled manner and provide a safe method for revealing healthy and renewed skin. Chemical peels (which typically do not have “down time” if received in a spa setting) can make skin smoother, help fade brown spots and improve uneven skin tone from sun damage. Overall, peels enhance the surface of the skin, allowing it to look brighter and younger. Having regular peels every 6-8 weeks will lead to collagen stimulation, healthy skin cell turnover and improve the appearance of wrinkles. Cooper Spa’s Glycolic Peel by SkinCeuticals will complement any Cooper Spa facial and can accommodate all skin types.

Is it preventive? Yes. Removing dead skin cells from the surface of the skin can help the skin continue renewing itself regularly, thus keeping its barrier function strong. A strong barrier function helps to defend against environmental stressors. Daily use of sunscreen is a must when using chemical exfoliators. As we know, the UV rays from the sun can cause premature aging and skin cancer.

How often should you do a chemical peel? A six-week series of glycolic peels is ideal to reach desired results with regular at-home maintenance as recommended by your Cooper Spa Dallas esthetician. Medical grade chemical peels are available at Cooper Clinic Dermatology, where one of our four board certified dermatologists will customize a treatment plan.  A medium-depth chemical peel is often recommended to improve overall texture and skin glow, in addition to treating pre-cancers and reversing photo damage. A chemical peel is a popular revitalizing treatment to regain a fresher, healthier and younger-looking complexion.

For daily skincare, follow these simple steps:

  • Cleanse – Clean skin daily twice daily (morning and night) to keep skin clear and remove debris, oil and makeup.
  • Exfoliate – Use a scrub or daily at-home peel to remove dead skin cells for healthy skin cell turnover. Over the counter exfoliators are not as strong as those given in the professional setting but are needed for maintenance.
  • Tone – Restore the pH balance of skin and remove residue from cleanser.
  • Moisturize (sunscreen) – Keep skin moist and always, always use SPF during the day! It’s a good idea to find a combination moisturizer with sunscreen of at least 30 SPF.

Expecting the Best at Cooper Spa

In just a few days, my due date will be here and I’m truly Expecting the Best with our second child—a girl! As the Director of Cooper Spa, Dallas, I thought it was the perfect time to experience our Expecting the Best package. I must say that if you are pregnant or know someone who is, this is a real treat. Carrying such a precious gift is truly a miracle, but it sure can tweak some muscles and cause some discomfort.

Happy Easter from the Carrolls!

Massage
With this pregnancy, I’ve had some upper back issues so the 50-Minute Pregancy Massage was just what I needed. The massage therapist worked her magic! I felt some relief immediately after the massage. Enough to know that I had waited too long for that healing touch.

Our Pregnancy and Postpartum Massage relieves stress through the use of massage, specialty contoured body pillows, soft music and aromatherapy. Improved circulation and diminished back and hip pain are benefits of this unique therapy for pregnant women. Postpartum massage can help tone and restore a new mother’s body to its prepregnancy condition and alleviate muscle strain and soreness.

Facial
Next up, my facial. The Eminence® Organic Customized Facial at Cooper Spa is one of my favorite services, regardless of being pregnant or not. The sensory experience is as enjoyable as the focused touch to my skin—lemon, strawberry, pineapple, hydrating stone crop… amazing! A little secret, I would bathe in SkinCeuticals® products if I could. And since my favorite SkinCeuticals Retinol product isn’t pregnancy-friendly, my skin has been ho-hum since day one of finding out ‘Little Miss’ was on her way. After adding in an eye brow wax, because who doesn’t want well-shaped brows in the delivery room, my skin was glowing! There is nothing like having a sense of circulation back in my face.

Pedicure
Finally after really having a wonderful time, I dipped my exhausted feet into that warm, soothing, cleansing pedicure bath. A little scrub here (and a very light rub there), then one of Cooper Spa’s skilled technicians added a pretty pink polish. These tired girls were suddenly feeling the love they were asking for. I suddenly wished I had been better about taking advantage of these services sooner.

But now that I have, I hope you’ll come try them soon or send your loved ones this way—we can take care of their every need! If you’re pregnant, it is always best to consult your physician prior to having spa services.

And remember Mother’s Day is May 11. Now through May 11, purchase a $250 gift card and receive a full-size gym bag complete with a 3-day Cooper Fitness Center guest pass*. As an added bonus, our Spa clients always enjoy complimentary childcare during any spa treatment.

Vita-Gel Manicure vs. The Other Gels

October 21, 2013 Leave a comment

Since gel manicures have been popular I have been an avid fan! I love the polished look of acrylic nails, but have never wanted to sacrifice the health of my nails. My nails are already thin, so gel manicures have been my saving grace. There are many different types of gel manicures which I learned are commonly mistaken for Shellac. Shellac is a brand of a gel manicure, among other popular brands I have tried like: OPI™ gelshine and Gelish. When I heard that Cooper Spa was introducing a new gel manicure that was not harmful to your hands or damaging to nails, it only made sense and I knew I had to try it!

Cooper Spa is one of the first in Dallas to offer this gel manicure system, Orly FX Gel Manicure. The manicure is incredibly durable and is guaranteed to remain chip-free for at least one week. Plus, it’s power-packed with an infusion of Vitamins A, E and Pro-Vitamin B5 to nourish nails. So what is the difference between Vita-Gel and the other popular gel brands? It utilizes LED light technology (rather than UV) and provides full protection and incredible shine in just 30 seconds.

I made my appointment with Marcia. The Vita-Gel Manicure process is simple, starting with nail shaping and cuticle treatment.  Marcia then treated my hands with Vanilla Tangerine Hand & Body Lotion, from the Beautiful Fit™ product line. It smells divine! For all signature services at Cooper Spa, we use Beautiful Fit™ products—Cooper Spa’s own private label which are free of parabens, mineral oils and artificial fragrance. All of the products are biodegradable, made from natural and renewable raw materials.

Once the polish was applied, Marcia put my hands under a LED dryer for 30 seconds to harden the polish and give it a beautiful shine. She repeated  the same process after a second coat. The polish dried in seconds leaving me with a long-lasting manicure. While I was getting my manicure she gave me great tips that I haven’t heard at any other salon. She recommended applying oil to my cuticles every night. Applying lotion to your hands and cuticles will prevent your cuticles from cracking, but the oil adds extra protection. Any type of oil you might have at home can work, or Cooper Spa has specific cuticle oils available for purchase in the boutique.

Typically I don’t stray from my comfort zone for nail color. I stick with my two favorites: OPI Cajun Shrimp (which is a fun orangey-red) or OPI Bubble Bath (which is nude). Marcia suggested a color that I would have never picked on my own—Mirror Mirror. It is a light grey, which she said is a great color for fall. I have gotten so many compliments and will definitely take her recommendations for a fun color on my next manicure! Cooper Spa offers 24 colors for the Vita-Gel Manicure.

After my manicure, I was greeted by the friendly staff who offered me a delicious, hot white orange tea. I decided to peruse around in the shop to look for the cuticle oil. Not only can you purchase Beautiful Fit products in the Cooper Spa boutique, but they also sell a few of my other favorites like SkinCeuticals®, Moroccanoil® and OPI polish. While looking around I also found Jack Black® products conveniently enough for brother’s upcoming birthday!
